Scholastic Chess Tournament Report

Tallahassee Scholastic Chess TournamentWe had a great turnout for our scholastic chess tournament this past Saturday. There were a total of 21 players vying for various trophies and prizes. The kids and parents were all great and I couldn’t have asked for a better group. I have posted more photos in an album on our facebook page. Feel free to tag the photos with you/your child’s name if I missed anyone. Also, if you took any photo’s at the tournament and would like to share, you should be able to upload them to our page there.

I want to thank the great guys at Gamescape for allowing us to hold our tournament in their store. They are very supportive of our chess club. Also, thanks to Don Conner, Lucas Stricker, and Hugh Cline for help with monitoring the games and/or helping to set up and break down everything. It was a huge help and much appreciated.

Listed below are the trophy and prize winners and that will be followed by a couple of charts listing how each player did overall and by grade/prize category.

In the K-3 grade category:

  • 1st place trophy went to Ben Chen of Gilchrest Elementary School. Ben was 2nd place overall and also receives a 1-year USCF membership.
  • 2nd place trophy went to Mat Reynolds of Hawks Rise Elementary School.
  • 3rd place trophy went to Jordan Myatt of Imagine School at Evening Rose.

In the 4-5 grade category:

  • 1st place trophy went to Julian Lee-Sursin of Kate Sullivan Elementary School. Julian was also 1st overall and receives a 1-year USCF membership. Also, he was the top player in the combine K-3/4-6 category and received a copy of the book Gary’s Adventures in Chess Country by Igor Sukhin.
  • 2nd place trophy went to Elijah Bolds of Florida High.
  • 3rd place trophy went to Benjamin Miller of Imagine School at Evening Rose.

In the 7-9 grade category:

  • 1st place trophy went to Libbi Smith of Imagine School at Evening Rose. Libbi was our 3rd place overall winner and receives a 1-year USCF membership. She was also the top female player of the tournament and received a copy of the book Play Like a Girl: Tactics by 9Queens autographed by the book’s author Women’s Grandmaster Jennifer Shahade.
  • 2nd place trophy went to Jordan Smith of Imagine School at Evening Rose.
  • 3rd place trophy went to James Hecking of Washington Middle School.

We did not have any players in the 10-12 grade category. Hopefully our next scholastic tournament we’ll see a few of the older kids come out.

Following is a wall chart of the tournament. It lists the player, school, and grade/prize category along with each round’s results. For each round, it will list whether they played the white or black pieces and who they played (chart #) and then their cumulative score after the round. A win is worth 1 point, a draw is 0.5, and a loss is 0.

To give you an idea how to read the chart I’ll run through a player’s tournament, round-by-round using the chart below. The first player listed, Elijah Bolds was in the 4-6 grade prize category and attends Imagine School. In his first round he was paired as white against player #21, Mecca Thornton and won his first round (thus showing 1.0). He won his second round game, as black, against player #16 and had a cumulative score of 2.0  after the round. He won again in his third round (as black against player #13) and had a 3.0 cumulative score after the third round. He lost his fourth round game (playing white vs. player #9), and the cumulative score remained at 3.0 after 4 rounds. He then won his final round game (playing black vs #14) and ended up with a cumulative score of 4.0 for the tournament. Note that because we had an odd number of players, some player’s received a BYE for the round and receive a 1 point for the round.

I know, as parents, you’re wondering why a player may have been awarded a trophy or prize over another player that had the same score. Well, the following chart is the “prize list” chart. It shows the overall placement of all the players and then a chart for the other prize categorys (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, Top Female). The first column after the players name is their score. The next four columns are a series of tie-break systems as recommended by the US Chess Federation. If two players are tied, you will look to the first set of tie-breaks (MMed = Modified Median). If that doesn’t break the tie, you move to the next tie-break (Solkoff), etc. You can read more about how these tie-breaks are calculated on the Tie-breaking in Swiss-system tournaments Wikipedia page.
