City (Tuscaloosa) to host state chess competition

Tuscaloosa NewsNext month, Tuscaloosa will be the site of the state chess championship, an event expected to book hotel rooms and fill restaurant tables on a weekend when the Crimson Tide is out of town.

“It should be a nice little pop,” said Don Staley, executive director of the Tuscaloosa Sports Foundation. “There are so many of these events flying under the radar here that bring a couple hundred thousand dollars here and there to our community.”

The Alabama State Chess Championship and Alabama State Scholastic Tournament will be on the University of Alabama campus Sept. 17-19, while UA’s football team will be playing at Duke University.
